Microsoft Makes Passkeys the Default for Stronger Digital Security

New Microsoft Entra ID update replaces traditional passwords with passkeys to provide faster, safer, and more secure account access

Redmond, Washington, 14 July 2026 – Microsoft has announced a major security update for Microsoft Entra ID by making passkeys the default authentication method for users. The change is part of the company’s ongoing effort to improve online security while making the sign-in experience simpler and more convenient for individuals and businesses.

For many years, passwords have been the primary way people access online accounts. However, passwords can be stolen, guessed, or exposed through phishing attacks and data breaches. As cyber threats continue to become more sophisticated, technology companies are moving toward passwordless authentication methods that provide stronger protection against unauthorized access.

Passkeys offer a more secure alternative to traditional passwords. Instead of requiring users to remember complex combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols, passkeys use biometric authentication such as fingerprint recognition or facial recognition, or a device PIN to verify identity. Since passkeys remain securely stored on the user’s trusted device, they are much harder for cybercriminals to steal or misuse.

With this update, new users of Microsoft Entra ID will automatically use passkeys as their primary authentication method whenever supported. This helps organizations strengthen account security while reducing the burden of managing passwords and frequent password resets.

The latest update also improves the overall user experience. Signing in with a passkey is typically faster than entering a password and completing additional verification steps. Employees can securely access business applications and cloud services with fewer interruptions while maintaining high levels of protection.

Microsoft has designed the system to support modern security standards that work across multiple devices and operating systems. This allows users to sign in securely whether they are using computers, smartphones, or tablets, creating a more consistent authentication experience across digital environments.

For organizations, adopting passkeys can significantly reduce security risks associated with phishing attacks. Because passkeys cannot be easily shared, copied, or entered into fake websites, they help prevent many of the most common forms of credential theft. This makes them an important part of modern identity and access management strategies.

The update reflects the broader shift taking place across the cybersecurity industry. Businesses worldwide are increasingly adopting passwordless authentication as part of zero trust security frameworks, where every login request is verified before access is granted. These approaches help protect sensitive business information while supporting secure remote work and cloud computing.

As digital transformation continues across industries, identity security has become a critical priority. Organizations are investing in advanced authentication technologies that improve both security and user convenience without creating unnecessary complexity.

By making passkeys the default authentication method in Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft is taking another step toward a future where secure digital access no longer depends on traditional passwords. The update demonstrates how modern authentication technologies can strengthen cybersecurity while delivering a smoother and more reliable user experience.
